KPMG is currently seeking a Director, Data Scientist - Optimization, to join our Advanced Data and Analytics Organization.


  • Lead a growing a team of optimization experts and big data cloud computing experts to deliver a myriad of optimization projects to our clients, and participate in related business development activities

  • Design and implement high-performance algorithms for data mining, optimization, machine learning, network analysis, and modelling

  • Work as part of a fast-paced team working on the full life cycle of analytics, from problem conception, solution formulation, algorithm development and implementation, to production

  • Utilize software development best-practices to create code to be deployed in production

  • Work in distributed and cloud computing environments to allow for scalable parallel algorithms to utilize additional computational power

  • Identify and experiment with new trends, to help stay in front of the curve, and innovate in the leading edge of optimization


  • PhD with 6+ years experience with degree in Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Industrial Engineering, or related field; would also consider MS with 8+ years experience

  • Strong mathematical background with expertise in one or more of the following fields: discrete and combinatorial optimization, linear and integer programming (including commercial optimization solvers), dynamic programming, heuristic search algorithms including genetic algorithms, simulated annealing, tabu search, simulation modeling including discrete event, agent based or system dynamics

  • Experience with command-line scripting, data structures, and algorithms; ability to work in a variety of environments including Linux, distributed computing and big data systems (Hadoop, Spark, Hive, Pig, Storm, Kafka, etc.)

  • Proficiency in implementing algorithms in multiple programming languages including profiling, debugging, testing; experience in formal development using version control (Git), unit testing, and documentation with Git, Jira, Confluence

  • Ability to travel
